Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2010 |
| This year Rawai students and guests of Atsumi Healing Center went to Phuket Town to witness the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. We visited Jui Tui Shrine and watched in awe the incredible spectacle. At the end of the activities, the young Kinjays bring back the deities, carrying them high above their shoulders. They are surrounded by firecraker smoke and incredibly loud noise. It's amazing, it's exciting and unique to Phuket. If you are planning a trip to Phuket in October, don't miss it! |

Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2009
 |
On Saturday October 24th, 2009 Rawai students and staff went to see the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is an annual event held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It is believed that the vegetarian festival and its accompanying sacred rituals bestow good fortune upon those who religiously observe this rite. During this time, local residents of Chinese ancestry strictly observe a 10-day vegetarian or vegan diet for the purposes of spiritual cleansing and merit-making. Sacred rituals are performed at various Chinese shrines and temples and aesthetic displays such as walking barefoot over hot coals and ascending ladders with bladed rungs are performed by entrance devotees known as "Ma Song". |
Below are some photos of the event.
